Weekly Photo Challenge: Today Was A Good Day

Entering the Black Forest.

                                                                                                                                                                           Entering the Black Forest.

Before Dapper’s ancestors emigrated to the United States, they lived in The Black Forest. When he chose this tour on our Rhine River cruise, I knew his desire to visit there was due to his connectedness to this woodland.

Black Forest valley.

                                                                                                                                                                                      Black Forest valley.

Listening to the guide tell us of the history and culture of this lovely countryside and to see the beauty of the hills and forest, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection, too.

Adolf Herr's Cuckoo Clocks.

                                                                                                                                                                     Adolf Herr’s Cuckoo Clocks.

Along the way, we stopped at a cuckoo clock maker’s shop. We were greeted by sweet Adolf Herr, a sixth-generation cuckoo clock carver, who treated us to the chimes and cuckoo calls of his two-story handmade clock and a taste of kirschwasser.

We never thought the Breisach temperatures would follow us to where we would be seeking refuge from its searing heat, but we were amply rewarded by some shade, good company, and a wonderful farmhouse lunch.

Authentic Black Forest cake from the Black Forest!

Driving down the hillside toward Breisach, through the lovely valleys, I felt happy that we were fortunate to have had this magnificent experience.

Quote of the Day:

On a clear day
Rise and 1ook around you
And you’ll see who you are
On a clear day
How it will astound you
That the glow of your being
Outshines every star
You’ll feel part of every mountain sea and shore
You can hear
From far and near
A word you’ve never, never heard before…
And on a clear day…On a clear day…
You can see forever…
And ever…
And ever…
And ever more. . .                     ~Alan Jay Lerner, Lyricist

  2. Those clocks looks decorative, but the constant “tick, tack, tick, tack, tick, tack” can drive me insane… I remember my grandma used to have a huge tick-fucking-tack clock on the wall. Every full hour it made some deafening noise, even in the middle of the night.
I guess it was there as a reminder that we’re all slowly closing in on death… (or perhaps she just thought it looked nice?)

  3. PS – Gotta tell you, my last blood tests showed slightly elevated sugar levels, so I may just drool over that recipe. I’m hoping my change in sugar level is just another side effect of chemo. Time will tell.
