I’m Going To Miss This Old Drawbridge
When large boats need passage, they either blare their horns to alert the bridge master or phone him. Then the clanging bells sound (like the bells that sound at the racetrack when the results are posted) to alert oncoming traffic that the crash barrier will be descending and then a single bell at intervals.
I can hear that sound from my bedroom before dawn when fisherman are going for a long haul and very late at night upon their return. I don’t know why–but I think it’s a lonely sound, like a train whistle in the night.
