Prescription To a Healthier Mind

On a warm tropical afternoon lying on a chaise looking through half squinted eyes, hand shielding the truant rays, one tends to let the mind wander. There’s always a race from September to December: lesson plans, open house, doctor’s visit for the obligatory flu shot, conferences, report cards, bulletin boards, new textbooks, birthday celebrations,  exercising, new administration, Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas shopping, holiday parties, and the most important: Lack of Time–whew!

So lying there on a soft pillow in the warm air tended to be very therapeutic. Though I am well aware of the Top Five for maintaining a healthy mind:

  1. Physical Exercise
  2. Healthy Eating Habits
  3. Limiting Alcohol Intake
  4. No Smoke, No Drugs
  5. Brain Exercises

lounging in that chair with the sun peeking through the dappled shade, I found one  prescription that escaped my memory: Letting Go.

Some events–cannot turnabout, some thoughts–leave one powerless, some relationships have a paralysis too accelerated to reverse. Once you fully understand the situation, the inimitable choice is to let go.

Quote of the Day for YOU:  Parting is all we know of heaven and all we need to know of hell. ~Emily Dickinson

  1. Janet’s reflection brings to mind a different message that has found its way to my inbox several times. When God takes something from you, He’s not punishing you. It leaves your hands open to receive something new. Such a hard lesson to understand and accept…..

  2. I hear you. Though my circumstances are different, letting go because we have to, because in all that we can and do control, there are some things we can’t control – is something I am beginning to understand. Letting go, I think, painful as that can be, leaves room for someting new. Thanks, my friend.
